What is Monitor- Definition, Types & Uses

Monitor, What is Monitor, Definition of Monitor, Types of Monitor, Advantages of Monitor, Disadvantages of Monitor, What is Computer Monitor

Do you know What is Monitor? Perhaps you must have heard about it, because all of us are very familiar with these computer monitors. We spend most of our time sitting in front of the monitors like for gaming, watching movies and many other things. In the same way, the monitor is used as a display unit in the computer system. A good display can make a huge difference in the experience of any users. Due to innovation in display technologies, the quality of display devices as also improve the lot. Now desktop computers are available in many varieties using the technology used in them such as from CRT monitors to the latest slim LCD, LED and OLED monitors etc.

There are many parameters to measure the performance of a monitor such as luminance, contrast ratio, resolution, dot, pitch, response time, refresh rate and power consumption. Along with the common problem that of an arise in monitors are dead pixels, blurred screen, phospho burn etc. So, today I thought why not given information about what is a monitor. With this information you will also be able to know the things which you have no idea before. So, without delay let’s start and know about what is computer monitor?

What is Monitor?

Computer Monitor is actually an output device which is technically called visual display unit. It is an output device that shows all the information of the CPU on the monitor screen. It is like an interface between CPU and user. A cable is connected to the video adaptor or video card which is set up with the computer’s motherboard. It looks very similar with televisions. The main difference between these two is that there is no television tuner in the monitor to change the channels, whereas it is in the television. Monitors have higher display resolution then television. A high display resolution provides convenience for weaving small letters and find graphics. A monitor is known by the names like screen display, video display, video display terminal, video display unit or videos screen etc.

Definition of Monitor

It is an output device of the computer that display the data input to the computer on the computer screen. Monitor is also known as ‘Visual Display Unit’, because it displays information on the screen. It is connected to the CPU, when the user inputs data or gives instructions to the computer through the keyboard or mouse, the computer output device shows the result in the monitor at the same time as the work is done. The monitor shows all the information to the user in the form of image, videos, and texts.

What is another name of Monitor?

A monitor or display (sometimes called a visual display unit) is an electronic visual display built into computers.

Who invented the Monitor?

The first cathode ray monitor was invented by Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1897 when he invented the first cathode ray tube.

Types of Monitor

There are many types of computer monitors available to use. Here I am going to tell about some types of monitors, which were used earlier and some are still being used. Then let’s know more about them.

1. CRT

These monitors use a cathode ray tube to display images. A vacuum tube, heaters, electron guns, deflection circuits and a class screen are used to construct this cathode ray tube. When electrons are produced inside the cathode ray tube, then the screen is bombarded by the electrons, due to which they glow and images are produced. CRT monitors resemble older television sets. They are bulky and also consume a lot of energy.

2. LCD

These LCD screens use monochrome pixel to project images. These pixels are systematically arranged between transparent electrodes and polarizing filters. Images form when the pixel are polarized. LCD monitors consume very little energy and provide much better graphic quality. Liquid Crystal Display is used in most of the computer monitors that we use now. In this, the range of a screen size is from 17 inches to 60 inches.

3. LED

LED monitors are the very latest types of monitors, that are available in the market. These are flat panel or slightly correct displays that use light-emitting diodes for back lighting, while cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL) back-lighting is used in LCDs. Very little power is used in LED monitors as compared to CRT or LCD. Apart from this they are also more environment friendly.

Its advantages are that it produces images that have higher contrast and also does not cause much negative environmental impact when it is disposed and it is also more durable then CRT and LCD monitors. Their design is also very thin. They do not generate much heat. Its downside is that it is more expensive.

4. Plasma

Plasma technology is another latest technology of display devices. The basic idea behind it is that it illuminates tiny coloured fluorescent lights from which image pixels are created. In this, each pixel is made up of three fluorescent lights which are red, green and blue lights. Due to which many varieties of colours are produced, along with this is intensity of these lights also varies accordingly.

5. OLED

The full form of OLED is Organic Light Emitting Diode. This is also a latest technology of display devices. As the name suggests, it is made of organic material such as carbon, wood, plastic or polymers, and is used to convert electric current into light. These LEDs are so capable that they can produce different coloured light, they can be used directly to produce the correct colour and there is no need for a backlight, which saves both power and space. Due to its fast response time, wide viewing angles, outstanding contrast levels and perfect brightness, these OLED displays are considered to be the best display technology ever.

Types of Monitor based on colour

There are mainly three types of monitors on the basis of colour.

1. Monochrome
2. Gray Scale
3. Color Monitor

What does Monitor do?

A computer monitor is a type of display adapter that displays information processed by the computer’s video card. When a video card or graphics card converts binary information from 1s and 0s into images, then the images can be displayed easily and directly on the connected monitor.

Therefore the main function of computer monitor is to display video and graphical information which is generated from the computer’s graphics adaptor. With this, it provides the facility to the user to interact with the computer. It is categorized according to an output device. This is a very important part of the entire computer system. It is also called video display unit (VDU).
